About Abbey Wood
Abbey Wood is considered an unfashionable locale. It is situated south of Thamesmead and is strongly affected by the Elizabeth line. The area suffers from flooding when the banks of Thames overflow. In order to control the floods a settlement was brought up by the monks who build a river wall to protect the residents and area’s population.
A railway station was opened in 1850s but the district remained largely rural. A tram depot was also constructed as a further expansion, but was later transformed to a bus garage. With the arrival of Crossrail draws nearby the house prices began to increase, but before that it was a destination for those who were particularly low on cash.
There is a plan for the transforming of an industrial site near Harrow Manor Way and other improvements such as Sainsbury’s supermarket with a series of flats stationed on top of it. In 2013 the area was made more accessible and appealing to residents with secured monies from Heritage Lottery.
